What is it about management by fear vs. trust?

If you have ever worked for a manager who leads by fear you know the feeling and it’s not a good one. Yes, as a strategy it works but it is short-term as it creates a toxic work environment. Unlike fear, managing by trust is a long-term strategy which provides growth and sustainability. So, one of the factors that makes up a great manager is being an effective strategist who knows the difference between what is counter-productive vs. building a community. What do you think?
